Winter fun for all the family

Winter fun for all the family

For a whole weekend, 20 different types of sport will be on offer for everyone to try. Why not have a go at pushing a bobsleigh, performing an elegant pirouette on the ice, shooting the puck into the ice hockey goal or putting your best foot forward on cross-country skis? Basically anything that’s fun and involves ice and snow will be on offer at the Winter Sport Festival being held from the 26th to the 28th of February in and around the Olympic Ice Sports Centre. What makes it even more exciting is that everything is free!

Willy Bogner, CEO of the company behind the Munich 2018 Olympic bid, who is involved with the organisation of the Winter Sports Festival, said: “Munich’s residents and visitors from the region can experience and try out the Olympic and Paralympics winter sports disciplines for themselves. Their enthusiasm for winter sports is one of the strengths of Munich's bid for the 2018 Games."

The motto “Join in and experience winter sports” is the order of the day. Everything gets underway on Friday with the warm-up. In the evening, it’s party time in the Olympic Ice Sports Centre’s training hall, where Disco on Ice promises an abundance of chart hits and a light show. The “Kids on Ice” talent competition, being held at lunchtime, will enable young sports enthusiasts to demonstrate their skill on the ice and try out short track. (Further information can be found at www.slic.de. The target group is talented young ice skaters between the ages of 9 and 14). And at the weekend, the Short Track Junior Challenge will set the stage for the real competitions in which young athletes from all over Europe will battle it out.

On Saturday and Sunday, thee will be lots of ice and snow-related activities going on. The biathlon, for example, promises plenty of snow-filled fun. The event will offer its visitors opportunities to take part, show races and demonstrations. The cross-country skiing event offers similar exciting highlights. Experienced coaches and trainers will be showing visitors how it's done in a demonstration of the techniques involved, and of course everyone can have a try on the skis for themselves.

The Munich Children's Play Mobile offers lots of great activities for kids of all ages. Not only can kids build sculptures on the snow-building site, but they can also show off their skills as show painters, using flour and pigments. Not only that, but they can build an igloo or get involved with lots of other play and sports activities. People with disabilities will find the event has lots to offer them too.

The Munich children’s biathlon has an exercise and coordination course set up on that children can enjoy using small, specially-produced skis. Depending on the depth of the snow, a children’s ski slope with various skiing and snowboarding activities will be on offer, along with a ski slope on the Olympic Hill, where keen skiers can try out some sledging.

Visitors to the bob and skeleton station can find out for themselves that it's not as easy as you might think, pushing a bobsleigh into the slide correctly. With crampons and ice picks, they can also climb an ice climbing wall. And the national curling team will be demonstrating its skills at this high-performance sport, which will no doubt be fascinating, especially for many of Munich's residents who already play this sport as a hobby.

Up on your runners and let's go! The ice hockey and figure skating professionals will have plenty of treats in store during the Winter Sports Festival in the Olympic Park. With lots of audience participation events and demonstrations, visitors can experience the fascination of these sports up close and try them out for themselves. Like the penalty shoot-out, for example, or beat the goalie. You can also watch the professionals and the youth teams at work: either training or playing.

Important note: material and equipment for hire is only available in limited quantities. To be on the safe side, please bring your own equipment with you.

In total, there are 20 different types of sport on offer at the Winter Sports Festival for visitors to learn about, see demonstrations of and try out for themselves. However, that's by no means all. The Show department will truly  make the Festival a completely unique, winter experience. The finest entertainment on the show stage with Radio Arabella presenter and DJ will put the finishing touch to the Winter Sports Festival, along with the torch message from Munich 2018 to Vancouver, the awards ceremony of the class competition "We are Munich" and of course live music from the party band "Ois Easy".

The Festival will also be flanked by two very interesting exhibitions: Garmisch-Partenkirchen will be showcasing original exhibits, recounting the history and development of ski jumping, and the Berchtesgadener Land will be shedding light on the importance of the artificial ice rink in Königsee for performance sports and for the region – in other words everything to do with luge, bob and skeleton sports.

Winter Sports Festival in the Olympic Park – three fantastic days guaranteed to be full of ice, snow and shows for the whole family!
